S01E02 – Propagation
Tiny Seeds, Big Mistakes
Propagation is where every grow begins — but as Sarah and Jasmine quickly discover, getting seeds started successfully takes more than simply putting them into a tray and hoping for the best.
Challenge Accepted
This episode begins with a challenge.
Both growers are called into the studio and handed an envelope containing only a few basic instructions. Tasked with figuring out the propagation process for themselves, Sarah and Jasmine must rely on their instincts to complete the challenge as quickly as possible.
The difference in approach becomes obvious almost immediately.
Jasmine takes her time, trying to work methodically through the process, while Sarah charges straight in, soaking plugs and making decisions at full speed.
While Jasmine is still searching for tweezers, Sarah is already halfway through the challenge. Unfortunately, speed doesn’t always mean success.
Learning The Hard Way
As the challenge unfolds, both growers make a critical mistake by placing multiple seeds into individual plugs — something Ian quickly explains should never happen.
Sarah’s unique propagation techniques don’t help matters. From squeezing soaked plugs to “encouraging” seedlings by talking to them, her methods leave both Ian and Karlos increasingly concerned.
Things only get worse when she adopts what can only be described as a very hands-on approach to planting the seeds.
Despite the chaos, Sarah somehow manages to finish first and takes the challenge win.
The celebrations don’t last long, though. Once the growers realise they’ve both planted incorrectly, they’re caught red-handed trying to secretly fix their mistakes behind the scenes.
What you’ll learn
This episode isn’t just entertainment — there’s plenty to take away for your own propagation success:
- How to properly prepare propagation plugs
- Why one seed per plug matters
- The importance of temperature and moisture control
- How to avoid common propagation mistakes
- What young seedlings need to establish strong roots

Common Propagation Mistakes
The challenge proves just how easy it is to make mistakes during propagation. Fortunately, most of them are easy to avoid.
Overwatering
One of the most common mistakes new growers make.
Propagation plugs should stay moist, but not saturated. Constantly wet plugs reduce oxygen around the roots and can lead to poor development or disease issues.
Squeezing The Plugs
It might feel like you’re helping by removing excess water, but squeezing plugs compresses the growing media and reduces the air space that young roots need
Using Water That’s Too Cold
Cold water can slow germination and root development. Room-temperature water helps maintain a stable environment for young seedlings.
Ignoring Temperature & Humidity
Young seedlings thrive in warm, humid conditions. Using a heated propagator, thermostat, and closed vents during the early stages helps create the ideal environment for successful germination.
Not Checking Them Regularly
Propagation isn’t something you can set up and forget about.
Seedlings change quickly during their first few days, so regular checks help you spot problems early and make small adjustments before they become bigger issues.
The Scoreboard
The first points have been awarded.
Despite a few questionable propagation techniques, Sarah’s speed was enough to secure victory in this challenge and move into the lead. With several challenges still ahead, the competition is only just getting started.
