S01E06 – Ventilation
Fresh Air, Better Results
A well-designed ventilation system is the foundation of a healthy grow environment. It helps regulate temperature and humidity, supplies fresh air to your plants, and keeps unwanted odours under control.
In this episode, Sarah and Jasmine take on one of the most challenging stages of the build as they install the ventilation systems in their grow tents. Along the way, Ian shares his practical advice for getting it right first time, while Karlos puts the growers’ attention to detail to the test.
Installing the Ventilation System
Installing a fan, filter and ducting can seem daunting, especially if it’s your first grow. With several components to fit inside the tent, planning ahead makes the job much easier.
Ian recommends installing your ventilation system before hanging your grow lights wherever possible. With more space to work, it’s easier to assemble the equipment, lift it into position and make secure connections before the tent becomes crowded.
Throughout the episode, both growers take very different approaches to the challenge, showing there’s more than one way to tackle the job.
What You’ll Learn
This episode covers one of the most important parts of any grow environment:
- Installing fans, filters and ducting correctly
- Positioning your extraction system for maximum airflow
- Choosing the right ventilation controller for your setup
- Avoiding common installation mistakes
- How airflow affects temperature, humidity and plant health
- Why every grow room needs a ventilation system tailored to its environment
Ian’s Top Tips
Installing your ventilation system doesn’t have to be complicated. Ian shares five simple tips to make the process easier and help you get the best performance from your equipment.
Build it on the floor first
Build your fan and carbon filter together on the floor before lifting them into the tent. Use a metal clamp to secure the connection and add tape if you’d like some extra peace of mind.
Get someone to help
Fans and filters can be awkward to lift on your own. Fit your rope ratchets first, then lift both components together into position. Mount them as high as possible towards the back of the tent and make sure everything is level.
Connect the ducting securely
Attach your ducting using the correct clamps and check every connection before switching the system on
Keep ducting as straight as possible
Avoid unnecessary bends and kinks in the ducting. Restricting the airflow reduces the efficiency of your extraction system.
Choose the right controller
Whether you choose a simple temperature controller or a fully automated environmental controller depends on your grow, your budget and the level of control you want.

Ventilation Breakdown
Ventilation is about more than simply moving air in and out of a grow tent. The right setup helps manage heat, humidity and odour, while keeping fresh air moving through the space.
To break it down, we’ve created two dedicated guides covering the fundamentals of ventilation and how fans and filters work together.
Ventilation 101
New to ventilation? This guide explains the role ventilation plays inside a grow tent, why it’s so important, and how good airflow helps create the ideal environment for healthy plants.
Fans & Filters
Choosing the right fan and carbon filter is essential for maintaining airflow and controlling odours. Learn how these components work together, how to size them correctly and what to look for when building your own ventilation system.
The Scoreboard
Lighting is an essential part of every indoor grow, but this episode is all about learning rather than competing. With no challenge point awarded, the scoreboard remains unchanged as both growers prepare for the next stage of the series.
